HYMN TO HER
LET ME INSIDE YOU
INTO YOUR ROOM
I'VE HEARD IT'S LINED
WITH THE THINGS YOU DON'T SHOW
LAY ME BESIDE YOU
DOWN ON THE FLOOR
I'VE BEEN YOUR LOVER
FROM THE WOMB TO THE TOMB
I DRESS AS YOUR DAUGHTER
WHEN THE MOON BECOMES ROUND
YOU BE MY MOTHER
WHEN EVERYTHING'S GONE
AND SHE WILL ALWAYS CARRY ON
SOMETHING IS LOST
BUT SOMETHING IS FOUND
THEY WILL KEEP ON SPEAKING HER NAME
SOMETHINGS CHANGE
SOME STAY THE SAME
KEEP BECKONING TO ME
FROM BEHIND THAT CLOSED DOOR
THE MAID AND THE MOTHER
AND THE CRONE THAT'S GROWN OLD
I HEAR YOUR VOICE
COMING OUT OF THAT HOLE
I LISTEN TO YOU
AND I WANT SOME MORE
I LISTEN TO YOU
AND I WANT SOME MORE
AND SHE WILL ALWAYS CARRY ON
SOMETHING IS LOST
BUT SOMETHING IS FOUND
THEY WILL KEEP ON SPEAKING HER NAME
SOME THINGS CHANGE
SOME STAY THE SAME

Made this yesterday as an alternative to a heavy dinner. It is great with water crackers, or in a pita with raw spinach leaves. :)
Baba Ganouj
Ingredients:
2 1-pound eggplants, halved lengthwise
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup tahini (sesame seed paste)*
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 garlic clove, chopped
Pita bread wedges
Preparation
Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously oil rimmed baking sheet. Place eggplant halves, cut side down, on sheet. Roast until eggplant is very soft, about 45 minutes. Cool slightly. Using spoon, scoop out pulp from eggplant into strainer set over bowl. Let stand 30 minutes, allowing excess liquid to drain from eggplant.
Transfer eggplant pulp to processor. Add 1/4 cup oil, tahini, lemon juice, and garlic; process until almost smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to small bowl. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill. Bring to room temperature before serving.) Serve with pita wedges.

I made this for dinner today, and it was EXCELLENT!
Substitutions: I didn't have fresh basil, so I substituted flakes. I also substitute a little fresh onion for the powedered stuff, and used cherry tomatoes instead of Roma because that's all I had on hand. None of that detracted from how good this was though. I will definitely make it again. I had it with Tree of Life Golden Crackers and goat cheese. On of the best raw soup recipes yet!
CREAM OF TOMATO SOUP
Makes 1 ½ cups, 1-2 servings
4 Roma or 2 vine-ripened tomatoes, seeded and chopped (about 1½ cups)
¼ cup water
½ tsp crushed garlic (1 clove)
¼ tsp sea salt
¼ tsp onion powder
1 Tbsp olive oil
½ avocado, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh minced dill or basil, or 1 tsp dried
Place all of the ingredients except the olive oil, avocado and dill or basil in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Add the olive oil and avocado and blend until smooth. Add the dill or basil and blend briefly just to mix.
Serve immediately.

CREAM OF ZUCCHINI SOUP
Makes 2 cups, 2 servings
½ cup water
1 zucchini, chopped (about 1 cup)
1 stalk celery, chopped
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp mellow white miso
½ tsp crushed garlic (1 clove)
¼ tsp sea salt
dash cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp olive oil
½ avocado, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh minced dill, or 1 tsp dried
Place all of the ingredients except the olive oil, avocado and dill in a blender. Blend until smooth. Add the olive oil and avocado and blend until smooth. Add the dill and blend briefly just to mix. Serve immediately.
FRUIT SALAD
This is a variation on a fruit salad recipe I like to make in the summer. It's a little less time consuming, but just as good.
½ cantaloupe, chopped
½ Red Delicious apple, chopped
Grapes (amount up to you)
½ cup blueberries (or more, up to you)
1 banana, sliced
powdered cinnamon
agave nectar
fresh ginger (optional)
½ lemon
Mix everything but the banana in a large bowl, and add agave and cinnamon and juice from lemon. I didn't have any fresh ginger around today (usually a staple in my house!), but if you do, mince some to taste and add it now as well. Once everything is mixed, add banana before serving. This is even better as a leftover the next day. I usually put everything in the fridge and serve with the banana when I'm ready to eat.

This is a fantastic little recipe I made today and had with baked tilapia seasoned with balsamic vinegar and Earth Balance spread ... Easy to make and SUPER tasty!
Since I was about 1/2 cup short of broccoli, I also added chopped raw mushrooms, and that turned out to be a great idea. I also improvised with powdered coriander and seasoned to taste, and that worked fine as well.

there is enough treachery, hatred, violence and absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day
and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace
those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach peace do not have love
beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average
but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

You can strive to be royalty,
borrow the title
and fashion a crown
with a magic marker
to hold your faded color,
but no magic to draw down.
Color your mask and cut it out,
repeat his words
like you have no doubt:
you're better than the rest.
But I see your crown is paper
and your words are hollow,
you can try and try,
but I'll never follow
the crooked path he walked along
to get snared in your
child-ish web.
It seemed as though this day would never come. Now that it is here, I can hardly believe it. I have spent eight long years embarassed, angry, and ignored. Finally, someone who speaks my language is in office --- someone who has the people and the world's best interest at heart --- someone who is about healing and dignity. It's going to be a long road back, but I think we have a good man leading us on the journey to being a great country, a great ally, and a respected, prosperous leader once again. I think I heard the world give a collective sigh of relief at noon.
Obama's speech was very good. It was a message of strength, perserverance, honoring the spirit of hard work and hope that built this country, and an extension of brotherhood to countries around the world who also seek peace, shared interests and a bright future.
I watched the speech in my living room, in the same spot where I saw him for the first time in 1994, and thought "that's what we need, someone like him. He's going to be somebody." And it was the same spot I sat when I was bursting with happiness as he gave his nomination speech and eventually his victory speech. I guess I will never forget where I was during the rise of Barack Obama! LOL.
I cried tears of joy watching CNN all morning --- it just feels so good!
I called mom around 11 a.m. to make sure she was watching, and she said she hadn't even gotten dressed yet, because she was glued to the TV. I was very surprised at that, because mom has been a big fan of Hillary Clinton since her huband was in office --- to my mom, the Clintons can do no wrong. She was a Hillary supporter all the way, and would always greet my pro-Obama argument with "well, I don't know," "isn't he too young and inexperienced," and "maybe he'll be OK." In the past few weeks, she's grown into a fan, just gushing about him and Michelle. Too funny. That's what I call Bill Clinton-esque charisma/rock star!
So, I think all this is going to take a little getting used to. Kinda like a dog that gets beaten and shuffled from bad home to bad home for eight years would be if it suddenly got a kind, benevolent, gentle owner who will keep it for life ... the ease and freedom is a little scary at first!
But, it's FINALLY a good day to be an American again.

It seems like a dream to be free of that political hi-jacking that took place for the past eight years. SO many people, like myself, were embarassed of our country for so long. We did not legitimately elect George Bush, his "presidency" was stolen. Twice. And our broken hearts turned to rage and finally to apathy and denial that we were being taken on a ride we didn't want to go on in the first place.
I first saw Barack Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where he was the keynote speaker on the evening of John Kerry's Democratic nomination. I was transfixed by his speech, because it was unlike any political speech I had heard, and it could not have echoed my sentiments more perfectly about the need for unity instead of division in this country. It was more of a sermon and a call for action than a political stump speech, and I wished for a minute that politicians could be more like this guy. I clearly remember saying to myself: this man is one to watch, he's so elegantly dynamic! The next day, I went to work, and all my friends in the newsroom were buzzing about the charismatic young man who gave the moving speech. We had never heard of him before, but that speech and that moment stayed with me for four years.
Four long and depressing years later, my life is different, but the extent to which I agree with him and want peace and dignity for my country has not changed. He's a natural born leader and a carrier of hope, and I'm proud to have him as my President.
Four years ago, the morning after the election, I cried for myself and for my country. I was devastated and afraid. This morning, I cried tears of happiness, hope and pride in my fellow Americans for wanting more than the crappy hand we have been dealt for eight years.
Thank the Goddess that everything comes full circle in time.

Oh, it's *almost* "Fight Night!" Haha.
I've been getting e-mails from friends who are licking their chops in anticipation. I just hope Joe goes for the jugular and keeps it together enough not to exaggerate or say anything crazy. (Unless it totally confuses her ... haha.)
This afternoon is going to be super busy/rushed. I have a reception for a retiring colleague to attend after work, and then I have to make it across town to the gym and home before the debate. I told L to record some of it if I'm not there yet. I think it starts at 9 p.m. I'm SO tired of that chick. She's SO way out of her league that even staunch Republican columnists for "The National Review" are calling for her to step down. She really needs to stop power trippin' on the spotlight and align herself with a situation she can handle better. Seriously.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect to his service and dedication (which I have total repect for): do you *actually* think he DIDN'T sustain a little bit of PERMANENT MENTAL DISTRESS/DISORDER? I am not willing to take chances that old Johnny won't flip out one day and have flashbacks. He's already made a looney choice with Annie Oakley, what else is there in the wings? I DO NOT want his finger on the button, thank you, and I certainly am not going to accept her as a leader should something happen to him. I hate to say it as another woman, but Tootsie doesn't have the least bit of my respect.
And while she's at it, she can keep her Bible thumping hands OFF MY OVARIES & ROE V. WADE, thankyaverymuch!
